Movies About Running
Chariots of Fire tells the fact-based story of two athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. The film was written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute’s list of Top 100 British films. The film’s title was inspired by the line, “Bring me my chariot of fire,” from the William Blake poem adapted into the popular British hymn Jerusalem; the hymn is heard at the end of the film. The original phrase “chariot(s) of fire” is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17 in the Bible.Endurance is the triumphant, true-life story of an Olympic hero … and just how far he came in order to become the fastest Olympic long-distance runner the world has ever seen! Raised under oppressive conditions in one of the world’s poorest countries, the Ethiopian boy named Haile Gebrselassie was born to run! When he wasn’t laboring in his father’s fields, young Haile would be running: the six miles to school and back, while doing chores, or simply for pleasure at the end of a long, hard day! In an inspirational and artfully crafted motion picture from heralded filmmaker Leslie Woodhead, the climactic moment comes as the unstoppable Haile chases down his lifelong dream in a stirring Gold Medal performance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games!Fire on the Track: The Steve Prefontaine Story is the story of what Sports Illustrated hailed as “America’s Distance Prodigy” as told through rare footage and the memories of those who knew him best – his teammates, coaches, family and friends. Interviews include David Bedford, Frank Shorter, Ian Stewart, Bill Bowerman, Jeff Galloway, Dick Buerkle, Lasse Viren, Dana Carvey, Mac Wilkins, Kenny Moore, Dave Wottle, Alberto Salazar, and many more. The Jericho Mile follows a prisoner serving a life sentence in Folsom Prison for first-degree murder. To break up the boredom of prison life, the main character Rain Murphy (played by Peter Strauss) begins running laps around the prison recreation track. Prison officials take notice when Murphy runs a mile in less than four minutes. They lobby to enter Murphy into the Olympics, an act of largesse that not only pulls Murphy out of his misanthropy but also helps to unify his racially divided fellow prisoners. Originally telecast as a made-for-television movie, The Jericho Mile was filmed on location at Folsom Prison, with several inmates playing small rolesLoneliness of a Long Distance Runner tells the story of a rebellious youth sentenced to a boys’ reformatory for robbing a bakery, who rises through the ranks of the institution through his prowess as a long distance runner. During his solitary runs, reveries of his life and times before his incarceration lead him to re-evaluate his privileged status as the Governor’s (played by Michael Redgrave) prize runner. Set in a grim environment of early-1960s Britain and like other films which deal with rebellious youth, it is a story of how the youth chooses to defy authority, in so doing securing his self-esteem (at the probable personal cost of continued confinement). The film places its characters thoroughly in their social milieu. Class consciousness abounds throughout: the “them” and “us” notions which Richardson shows reflect the very basis of British society at the time, so that Redgrave’s “proper gentleman” of a Governor is in contrast to many of the young working-class inmates.Running Brave is the inspiring story of Billy Mills the American Indian that overcame adversity to go on to win the 10,000 meter long distance race in the Tokyo Olympics. In one of the great upsets in sports history, distance runner Chief Billy Mills sprinted from 3rd place and took the gold medal in the final heat of the 10,000 meter race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Mills is still the only American in history to accomplish this feat. Robbie Benson portrays Mills, the Oglala Sioux who left the reservation in the late 1950′s for his date with Destiny. Pat Hingle and a young Graham Green also star. D.S. Everett directs.Without Limits follows the life of famous 1970s runner Steve Prefontaine from his youth days in Oregon to Oregon University where he worked with the legendary coach Bill Bowerman, later to Olympics in Munich and his early death at 24 in a car crash.
