The key to being a good runner is to run every day. Runners have to keep their heart and lungs healthy to get the most out of running. One of the most important things that runners can do is see their doctors regularly. Many runners have dropped dead while running due to an undetected heart or lung condition. Seeing a doctor on a regular basis will help prevent and treat any preexisting problems.

Runners also need to make sure that they eat a heart-healthy diet. Foods that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol clog the arteries, which can lead to a host of health problems. Fish, fruits, vegetables and whole-grains contain nutrients that the heart needs to stay healthy. Smoking and excessive alcohol can also cause harm to the heart and lungs. Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and it also puts extra pressure on the heart. Drinking too much alcohol increases the risk of developing high blood pressure, which can lead to stroke and heart attack. Smoking should be avoided altogether, but if a person chooses to drink, he or she should limit it to one or two drinks per day.

Keeping the heart and lungs healthy will allow a person to get the most out of running.

Although for non runners, the arms may seem to be trivial in the technique of running, for those who are runners you know that your arms are an essential piece to the puzzle, especially if you want to keep ahead of the pack in a big race. So, when you are running, your arms should never just dangle on your side, and should constantly be kept up and pumping, in order ot give you the motion you need, and in order to help keep your jog or run in stride. Your arms give you the rhythm of the pace you are going, and they help to keep you in motion during a longer run, and help keep you in stride with your actual legs which are carrying you around on the run.

Properly pumping your arms can also help keep you cooler, and help keep your lungs open, making it easier for you to breath more easily, and to keep up the stamina and endurance during a longer outdoor race. So, if you want to go for longer durations, and stay ahead of the other runners out there, you know that the arms are a key piece to the overall running technique.

Before you decide to focus on distance or speed, take a few minutes for self-examination. You-ll find yourself running the wrong path if you fail to consider your physical needs, experience, and your medium and long term goals.

First of all, are you a beginner? If so, this is a very easy question to answer. Spend some time building up your distance and endurance. This is a formative time, and a period of low intensity before you push hard will prevent injury down the road. Spending time improving your basic endurance and cardio conditioning will also provide a wonderful base to build speed on when you are ready.

And what should you do if you-re a more experienced runner? Take an honest evaluation of your physical conditioning. Working on the basics before pushing the stopwatch is always wise.

If you-re happy with your capacity, then consider your goals. Do you want to race, or would you rather run trails? If you have an uncompetitive nature, you may never care about taking your speed to the max.

Either way, it is best to ensure that you have built the capacity to cover the miles before you pick up speed. Pushing too hard, too fast can only lead to injury and backtracking.

Running is an easy, natural pastime and there are only a few things you need. Here’s our must-have list.
Good Shoes: It’s true that you need to change out your running shoes every couple hundred miles or at least every 6 months. The padding will wear and cause knee and ankle pain and you’ll notice an immediate difference in your stride with a new pair.
Water: Hydration is key, as any athlete knows, and you don’t have to have a fancy camel pack or a hydration belt to stay wet. A sturdy water bottle or a simple route mapped out around water fountains will do just fine.
Sunscreen: Running outside is great for your health but it’s possible to get quite burned at any time of the year. Always wear sunscreen of SPF 30 and above on your face and neck to avoid sun damage.
That’s it! Get out there and run!

Switch Gears by Varying your Stride

When it comes to healthy running habits, one of the most important tips is to assure that you are good and stretched out, first. You want to perform hamsrting and quadricep stretches, as this prevents injury and also loosens you up so that the run will really benefit you. Also, they say to vary the surfaces you run on, for example, from the street to the gym. You should also vary running times, so the duration of your run is different every day. A very good way to get the optimal run is on a treadmill. This piece of equipment will get you the optimal run, variety included. You can change your pace on it, i.e., the speed you have to keep up. You can start out fast and then slow your pace all within the same workout training. Also, the incline on it can be changed within the same workout; it’s simple to adjust the incline setting on a treadmill even while running. In one workout you can run slowly up a hill, then pick up your pace on a level setting; it’ll give your muscles a excellent workout, if you vary your stride and switch gears often.

When you are running, for exercise or pleasure, it is important that you are breathing properly. Breathing the right way will not only enhance your performance, it will help you gain more health benefits from your run.

When you inhale you are taking in the oxygen you need, everyone knows that. But did you realize that your muscles will perform better if they are properly oxygenated? Muscles will suffer less strain, build more lean mass and perform better when they have a good supply of oxygen.

So how do you breathe properly? When you are running you should try to always inhale through your nose. While this may seem silly to say, most people when they are running resort to breathing through their mouth. When you gulp air through your mouth, you are not filling your lungs as well as if you inhale through your nose.

Changing your breathing pattern to “through the nose only” will benefit your muscles as well as strengthen your lung capacity. As your lung capacity increases, so will your endurance. You will be able to run farther and longer.

All in all, by changing your breathing habits, you will find that your overall health will improve.

Is it possible to meditate while wearing running shoes? Going for a jog is not only a great form of exercise for your body, it also helps you get in touch with your soul. Jogging for the body and soul is one of the ultimate ways to balance your energy on multiple levels.

When jogging, the rhythmical cadence of your feet hitting the pavement, the inhalations and exhalations, and the beat of the heart can sometimes send a jogger into a deep state of focus, almost like meditation. The movement of the joints sends signals to areas of the brain that release feel-good hormones and natural substances that decrease pain. This allows the jogger to continue at a steady cadence for a long time. Some runners say they feel a “high” energetically, and this sensation is often what motivates them to go jogging every day.

This form of exercise also burns up extra stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which relaxes the body afterward. When the body is relaxed with less distractions and stressful thoughts, it is easier to feel interconnected with others and the world and with one’s own soul. The body and soul are interconnected in many ways, and jogging can often take exercise to a higher level.

Running is a very healthy exercise and athletic endeavor that has many benefits for the overall health of the participant. Running is an activity that is enjoyed by many across the nation, and around the world. In order for the activity of running to be helpful and healthy for an individual, there are measures that need to be taken.

An individual seeking to begin running, should ensure that they have proper running shoes. High-quality running shoes will give them protection from the impact against the ground, which will help to prevent any stress injuries. High-quality running shoes will also give an individual firm footing, and will prevent them from slipping or falling during their run.

It is helpful to have the support of others while running, and running in groups can be very helpful in providing mutual support to all of the participants. An individual’s drive is very important in order for individuals to get the most out of his or run. Recovery time is one of the most important aspects of any physical activity or exercise regimen. There must be adequate recovery and rest time between runs, in order for individuals body to consistently grow stronger, leaner and healthier.

In an earlier blog we talked about nutrition in general, but we now offer some specific food ideas to include in your diet as you work toward total balanced nutrition.Almonds are excellent sources of vitamin E and should be added to a runner’s diet at least three times a week to take full advantage of this naturally-occurring vital antioxidant.Eggs get a bad rap, but in actual fact the egg protein is the most complete food protein on the market. If you eat only one of these egg-shaped protein powerhouses you’ll be getting about 30 of the daily value of vitamin K (essential for strong bones). And don’t fret too much about the cholesterol since studies show that people who eat eggs actually have a lower risk of heart disease than those who avoid them altogether.Salmon is considered the king of fish when it comes to nutrition. It’s not only an excellent source of high-quality protein (like the egg) but salmon is one of the best natural sources for omega-3 fats (key in balancing the body’s inflammation response and we know how critical that is to a runner). Easily prepared baked, grilled, or poached, salmon is a power house that should be eaten as often as possible. There are other foods of course (like whole grain breads and vegetables), but these three seem to provide the biggest punch. Experiment with ways to get them into your diet on an as-regular basis as possible.
