How Proper Breathing Can Improve Performance

When you are running, for exercise or pleasure, it is important that you are breathing properly. Breathing the right way will not only enhance your performance, it will help you gain more health benefits from your run.

When you inhale you are taking in the oxygen you need, everyone knows that. But did you realize that your muscles will perform better if they are properly oxygenated? Muscles will suffer less strain, build more lean mass and perform better when they have a good supply of oxygen.

So how do you breathe properly? When you are running you should try to always inhale through your nose. While this may seem silly to say, most people when they are running resort to breathing through their mouth. When you gulp air through your mouth, you are not filling your lungs as well as if you inhale through your nose.

Changing your breathing pattern to “through the nose only” will benefit your muscles as well as strengthen your lung capacity. As your lung capacity increases, so will your endurance. You will be able to run farther and longer.

All in all, by changing your breathing habits, you will find that your overall health will improve.
